Body & Soul

Overview

Two soul-stirring premieres from Crystal Pite and Kameron N. Saunders.

How do we interpret the world around us – in our bodies and in our minds? This bold programme explores the very core of the human experience.

The UK premiere of Body and Soul (Part 1) from acclaimed choreographer Crystal Pite, originally created for Paris Opera Ballet, presents variations on a theme of conflict. Dancers morph from intimate duets to surging crowds, weaving precision and fluidity into mesmerising waves of movement.

Kameron N. Saunders has built a huge following as a commercial dancer for some of the world’s biggest artists, including Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan. He is also a prize-winning choreographer. Inspired by personal experience, Saunders’ world premiere of Proper Conduct explores the search for authenticity under society’s gaze. Set to a new score by Brandon Finklea and Harold Walker III , performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic.

Reviews

A bold, visually innovative double bill that feels like exactly what contemporary ballet needs right now

The Young(ish) Perspective

A marvellous work, grand and compassionate.

The Independent on Body and Soul (Part 1)

There’s excitement and ingenuity in Saunders’s choreography and ENB’s dancers took full advantage.

The Times on Proper Conduct

Pite’s alchemical skills allow her abstract dance to speak deeply and affectingly to emotional truths, the concentrated detail of her work adding rich layers at every turn.

The Stage on Body and Soul (Part 1)

Saunders has delivered a heartfelt response to his commission

LiftedLeg on Proper Conduct

Hypnotic is barely adequate to describe the scene which unfolded on stage. Pite masterfully moved her dancers like a flock of birds, a murmuration, within high and low tides

Bachtrack on Body and Soul (Part 1)

English National Ballet is staggeringly good... The works are totally different in feel and style, but they both fill the stage with pulsating energy in powerful ensemble choreography

British Theatre Guide

Crystal Pite's group formations take my breath away... it's stunning and the company dazzles
