The Audition

One of the toughest aspects of a dancer’s career has to be the audition process. In the space of a few minutes, the dream of performing for a top dance company can be granted or dashed. Hundreds of professional dancers and graduating students apply for a position at English National Ballet every year.

Mouse-handlers November

November 2007
They say that teachers are always picking up colds and bugs from working closely with children. Well, try working with big mice. I mean dancers! Bugs, colds, flu, sore throats and a multitude of nasty things seem to filter through the Company. I’m now on my second bad cold. On our day off I spend most of it in bed. The shows at Dunstable are fantastic, what a nice, nice theatre. Big thanks go to all the crew.

October 2007Venues are flying by now. Since we took the show to Sunderland andhad our first taste of putting it up on our own, we are now settlinginto a routine and all the crew are comfortable doing their own dutiesautomatically. It’s great to see the guys working the get-in andget-out, we all seem to know what needs to be done and when to do it.

Long days just get longer! Thankfully, the get-in and fit-upof the show goes smoothly, we have great support from Dave and Andy(ENB crew) and Al Riches is on hand to show us all how the show goestogether.

Mouse-handlers February

A Dancing Mouse!?
February 2007

So, I get an email from Al Riches (Technical Director for English National Ballet) asking if I would like to have a chat about taking a tour out for them. OK, sounds interesting, the meeting takes place in a pub in central London. I've met Al a few times since working at Central School of Ballet and it’s good to see him. Over a drink Al explains that a brand new production is being put together, smaller than the main Company but with a pretty big touring schedule. It’s to have five crew, self contained set and lighting, eight dancers, one ballet mistress, all travelling in one 45 foot trailer and one mini bus. Sounds like fun I say. Oh yes, and it’s about a dancing mouse adds Al.

Service of Thanksgiving for Dame Alicia Markova DBE

The Service of Thanksgiving for the Life and Work of Dame Alicia Markova DBE on 8 March saw a 'full house' at Westminster Abbey as dance-lovers from around the country and overseas gathered to celebrate the life of the first, great, British ballerina. The congregation spanned the decades of her remarkable career and included young students from English National Ballet School, Arts Educational Schools and London Studio Centre as well as some of the dancers who toured with Dame Alicia and her partner, Anton Dolin, in the Markova-Dolin Company and Festival Ballet, the company that is now English National Ballet.

Dame Alicia Markova, Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Founder and President of English National Ballet

The people's ballerina

An appreciation by Jane Pritchard, Archive Consultant, English National Ballet

Dame Alicia Markova, DBE (born Lilian Alicia Marks) was one of the greatest ballerinas of the twentieth century. The critic, Arnold Haskell described her as belonging 'to the royal family of the dance. A true descendant of Taglioni and Pavlova her name is a household word'. Her exquisite fragility and weightlessness was an illusion disguising a steel-like technique and strength and her beautiful feet and hands could dart or flow, shaping her movements in response to music.
