Romeo & Juliet

Romeo & Juliet

“An unforgettable hurricane of passion”
The Daily Telegraph

Rudolf Nureyev created this magnificent staging of Romeo & Juliet especially for English National Ballet in 1977. The Company has since performed it worldwide to critical acclaim. Shakespeare's heartbreaking love story is brought to life by Nureyev's inventive choreography and sumptuous costumes and sets which transport you to
Renaissance Verona.

From the breathtaking sword-fights of the Capulets and Montagues to the spellbinding romance of Romeo and Juliet's balcony scene, Nureyev's Romeo & Juliet blazes with passion.

“Romeo is one of the iconic parts in ballet that you always dream of getting the chance to perform, and we’re lucky to have Wayne, our Artistic Director coaching us who was an iconic Romeo of his generation – we’ve been watching him and his Juliet on DVD, their connection was so real!”
Esteban Berlanga, Soloist

60 Years... of Romeo & Juliet
Rudolf Nureyev’s award-winning production of Romeo & Juliet was created for English National Ballet as their contribution to the festival marking the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. It has subsequently been performed by other international companies.

Nureyev’s production is notably faithful to Shakespeare’s play, rich in symbolism of fate and mortality. It was the second of five versions danced by English National Ballet, it was also Nureyev’s second production for English National Ballet after he mounted his Sleeping Beauty two years earlier. These productions inaugurated a period when Nureyev was very closely involved with the Company.
