The Nutcracker

Gerald Scarfe and Christopher Hampson's
The Nutcracker

English National Ballet performed this magical production of The Nutcracker from 2002 - 2009. This vibrant and eccentric production designed by Gerald Scarfe and choreographed by Christopher Hampson featured a giant Fridge Freezer from which Snow Flakes and Jack Frosts appeared and a giant flying Origami Bird. The characters were created by caricaturist Gerald Scarfe and played on National stereotypes for the infamous Act II variations including a Russian Bear and karate-chopping Chinese take-away merchants.

The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara, her Nutcracker doll and the magician Drosselmeyer, and their amazing adventures in the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of the Sweets. It is a spellbinding experience; Clara battles with a Mouse King, dances with snowflakes and falls in love with a handsome Prince.

London Festival Ballet performed Nutcracker as their first full-length ballet at the Stoll Theatre London, on 24 October 1950. This was the opening of what was to become English National Ballet’s first official London season.

English National Ballet was the company that put The Nutcracker on the map in Western Europe. It had been danced by other companies but did not have a central role in the repertoire until English National Ballet placed it at the heart of its annual programme and made it the popular Christmas feature it is today. In the 1950s, Balanchine’s production of The Nutcracker for New York City Ballet played a similar role in the USA.
