BIG DANCE IS BACK

As the West London Hub for Big Dance 2014, English National Ballet is thrilled to be flying the flag for all things dance in this area. Everyone is welcome to be a part of the festival, with dance related performances, workshops, exhibitions, debates, photography and films taking place across all of the UK. 

BIG DANCE COMMISSION 2014: KINETIC ECHO - OUR DANCING SELVES

Award-winning choreographer Cameron McMillan explores the relationships between dance, artistic identity and the digital flow of information with young dancers from ENBYouthCo. Kinetic Echo - Our Dancing Selves will be performed at Westfield London on 24 July 2014. Find out more and contribute!

BIG COMMENWEALTH DANCE - BEATS FOR PEACE

During the Big Dance weekend, a major dance film commission by internationally renowned choreographer Rafael Bonachela, Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company, will take place in Trafalgar Square on Saturday 12 July.
Big Dance is looking to recruit 2,014 volunteer dancers to get involved with this exciting project which, through a live linkup, will connect three international cities; London, Glasgow and Sydney. You can sign-up as an individual or as a group (ages 14+) and start learning the choreography today.

Once you complete the registration process, you’ll receive access to all the resources to help you learn or teach the choreography.

BIG DANCE BUS

All aboard! The Big Dance Bus is gearing up for another all-singing, all-dancing trip around the UK! The Big Dance Bus pops up in the most unexpected places and provides a platform for the widest imaginable range of dance performances. Bus stops for 2014 include Covent Garden, Hillingdon Carnival and Paddington Arts Festival. Visit the webiste for the full bus route.

BIG DANCE YOUTH PLATFORMS

A chance for local youth dance groups and companies to perform at high-quality events across the capital. This initiative is supported by EMDP (Exercise, Movement and Dance Partnership) and aims to offer children and young people performance platforms and free dance workshops. Platforms are happening across the capital during the Big Dance week – see the Big Dance Guide [PDF] for full details.

BIG DANCE SHORTS – THE UK-BRAZIL DANCE CONNECTION ON FILM

Big Dance, British Council and Channel 4 in association with BAFTA are delighted to announce the five projects chosen for the second series of Big Dance Shorts, this time focusing on the creative relationship between Brazil and the UK.

One of the films, Dueto, features dancers from English National Ballet exploring questions of belonging and displacement between the UK and Brazil. First Artist Tamarin Stott created choreography for the film, working primarily with Lead Principal Fernanda Oliveira and Junior Soloist Junor Souza. 

The winning films will be broadcast in the UK on Channel 4 during Big Dance Week 2014 as part of the Random Acts strand, and in Brazil during the summer, before going on to numerous screenings as part of Big Dance’s nationwide programme of events. You can find out more about this and the other films on the Big Dance website .

BIG DANCE PLEDGE

Once again English National Ballet joined in the celebration of dance in 2014 and led a performance of the Big Dance Pledge this year at Westfield London. This special 5th edition of the Big Dance Pledge was created by Scottish Ballet as part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme of the XX Commonwealth Games.

The day began with a bang as 220 dancers from Greenside Primary school in Hammersmith performed the Big Dance Pledge choreography in front of the busy shoppers and enthusiastic friends and family. For the second performance at 7pm, English National Ballet worked with a group of 70 dancers from across West London to create an intergenerational performance, celebrating the fun and dynamic spirit of Big Dance. 

Shoppers, dancers, family and friends engaged in this spontaneous celebration of dance and contributed to the total of 67,000 people who took part in the Big Dance Pledge in 2014. You can find out more about the Big Dance Pledge on the Big Dance Website.
