English National Ballet’s thought-provoking dance criticism course, Dance is the Word, is back for the third year, providing a platform for aspiring dance writers to showcase their work and develop their skills.
Led by English National Ballet and The Times dance and theatre critic Donald Hutera, Dance is the Word gives aspiring reviewers exclusive access to Britain’s much loved ballet company and a behind-the-scenes insight into English National Ballets Emerging Dancer Award. Participants will have the chance to watch dancers in rehearsal, pose questions to dancers of the company and attend a programme of workshops before writing a review of the Emerging Dancer awards. Over the three days, Donald Hutera will provide expert guidance helping to develop participants dance writing and analysis skills.
Following the course, writers will be invited to attend performances and events, and report on a wide variety of activities throughout 2013 by writing reviews and articles for English National Ballet’sblog.

Big Dance 2012
Dance is the Word was a dance writing and criticism course that gave aspiring reviewers exclusive access to English National Ballet.
The writing course was led by The Times dance and theatre critic Donald Hutera, who provided expert guidance to the participants on how to write a successful review. The participants attended a three-day course including a day behind-the-scenes at English National Ballet, watching rehearsals, meeting dancers and learning more about the Company.
After a day of writing skills workshops with Donald at Westminster Reference Library, the participants attended English National Ballet’s Emerging Dancer Awards and wrote a review of the event which was critiqued by Donald for further improvements.
Following the course, writers acted as ambassadors for English National Ballet’s programme of dance activity throughout Big Dance 2012. They attended performances and events, and reported on the wide variety of Big Dance activities by writing reviews, blog entries and social media posts.
