60 Years Dame Alicia Markova made it a condition of establishing the company that a production of Giselle was mounted. Giselle has therefore been associated with English National Ballet since the very beginning in 1950.
Mary Skeaping’s production of Giselle remains the most faithful to the romantic style of the original. It was commissioned by Dame Beryl Grey at the time when English National Ballet’s repertoire was being ‘up-graded’ in conjunction with their regular seasons at the London Coliseum.
This new version of Giselle was sensitive to the need to have productions capable of touring to smaller regional venues, in order to fulfil the Company's original vision- taking ballet to the widest geographical audience possible.
