Design a tutu compeition

If you'd like to win some amazing ballet goodies - get creative and enter our competition.

The ballet we are performing this Autumn, The Sleeping Beauty, has hundreds of beautiful costumes many of which are tutus for all the different fairies. We'd like you to design your own tutu for a fairy you have created; if you like swimming you could make a costume for a super-swimming fairy for example!

You can pdf download this picture to help you get started

Design a tutu

The tutu is made up of three seperate parts;

Underskirt or the plate, this is the most identifiable part of a tutu, made up of many metres of netting
Top skirt, the part of the tutu with the most decoration on, so you can really tell the story of the character
Bodice, like a leotard that is stitched into the underskirt to make sure the pieces don't come apart when dancing

Be careful to remember that ballerinas need to be lifted by the men so any decoration like jewels or lace on the sides of the bodice might hurt the men's hands or cause the ballerinas to slip out of their hands!

Make sure you explain why you have chosen to decorate your tutu in a particular way and how this shows off the character of your fairy.
